We are all sitting in one boat!

“We are all sitting in one boat” is a funny pronounced quote by a german politican. You can transfer this quote to the whole creative industries. This time we will talk about the future of television and broadcasting. Thomas Meser-Hermann is the mind behind of some famous animated music videos. Here is one of them.

Publishung / Press / Books - Did you know 4.0?

Since we all know that digitalization turned the world upside down, it isn´t surprising that the world of publishing is changing, too.

According to Bernd Adam (CEO Fachpresse VDZ) digitalization has some serious effects on the publishing market:

  • different types of media melt together and form a new generation of media
  • new competitors (like wikipedia and youtube) enter the market
  • new competitors define the advertising market (Google, Facebook etc.)

Did you know that even if you would like to buy the Ecyclopedia Britanica in Germany, which costs about 1.900$, or the Duden (famous German dicitonary) getting them won´t be easy, because they stopped printing these books. They got replaced by digital reference books like wikipedia.

Mobile Games and Social Games will dethrone old king console.

Long time ago (well ok, just a few years ago) people were just playing games on their video game consoles or pc. But times they are changing. Young Companies like Rovio, the makers of Angry Birds, have one of the biggest growth rate in the games industry. Rovio is one of the most famous example why there is a big chance to make a lot of money with one creative idea.

Beside mobile games, the social game markets grows very fast. One of the most succesful company in social games is Zynga. You will know them by your facebook friends that invite you to play farmville, fishville or other games you do not really want to play with them.

We talked enough, let’s play a classic game in a new way. http://firstpersontetris.com/

Publishing, Press and Books

A few month ago the wife of a friend of mine published her first book. It´s some kind of fiction novel about vampires. As she didn´t find a propper publisher, she did it all by herself….of course in a digital way.

This example shows how the process of publishing changed.

For a first impression please check out this link and the infographic below.

Is fun the future?

In our next lecture we will discuss the Games Industry with David An, founder of RumbleMedia. One of our topics is Gamification. What is Gamification? Is it the next big thing? And can it help us to get better persons?

Gamification is the use of game design techniques and mechanics to solve problems and engage audiences.  (mashable.com) A  Gartner report from April 2011 of this year suggests as much. Analysts predict that by 2015, more than 50% of organizations will gamify their innovation processes.

Here is a great example:

Music Industry Sectors

In last week’s lecture with Hubert Wandjo, several sectors in the Music Industry were covered; Live Entertainment, Recorded Music, Music Publishing and Digital Music. The sectors have been explained with the presentations which covered the key points of; Market Data, Political/Legal Environment, Value Chains, Business Models, Players, Opportunities/Threats and Interdependence/Interaction with the other sectors.

Below you can find several sources for getting the sector specific information:

IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry)

Since our blog is also a digital platform, it is also definetely worth sharing the digital tools for music that we were introduced to last week.

Tunecore , Zimbalam , Recordjet are useful self promotion tools. In addition to these, with Songpier it is easy to turn songs into applications. When it comes to fan relationship management, Mailchimp is a great tool for email list managing. One of the latest tools that is becoming very popular is the Pay with a tweet option.

But the best way to end this blog post would be the latest album of Björk, since it is a very good, visual example of how the sectors of music industry can be in the future!

What about the Future of the Music Industry?

As we all know Music Industry is going through a tough time. The digital revolution caused several changes in how music is consumed and altered the way we look at cultural goods in general.

Does the Music Industry has to deal with a modified value chain?

What new promising business models can be established?

One main issue is of course how copyright should be enforced in the digital world and if the copyright system is needed to be adapted. If you want to get a little inside to the copyright discussion, please read the open letter from Mark Chung (Chairman of the German association of independent music companies VUT) here.

Below you find an infographic about the Present and Future of Music. Enjoy!
